In the world of success stories, ours began with a serendipitous encounter and a spark of inspiration. It was in 2016, while picking up my wife, Laura, from her workplace, that I overheard a manager seeking assistance for a compliance drive. With no other plans for the afternoon and no volunteers stepping forward, I offered to lend a hand. This experience introduced me to the concept of compliance drives conducted by Homeowners Associations (HOA) to ensure residents adhere to guidelines for well-maintained properties. As I drove past each house with a checklist, it dawned on me that this task resonated with my current work, like providing emergency relief for FEMA which involved property assessments through photographs. I also saw room for a more efficient and streamlined approach to conducting compliance drives.
Despite initial skepticism about the viability of a third-party service provider in the HOA industry, often managed in-house or through real estate companies, I delved into researching HOA operations and compliance procedures. Undeterred, I crafted a business plan and model, founding Inspections R Us later in 2016 with a vision of tapping into this untapped market. Over the next two years, I tirelessly worked on refining my business proposal, pitching my ideas to various HOAs. In 2018, we secured our first HOA client, and by 2019, we were serving seven HOAs.
Managing services for these seven HOAs demanded significant time and effort, as I shuttled between Dallas and Houston to cover the properties. Notably, the Houston HOA was one of the largest in the country, presenting a valuable opportunity for future growth. However, despite our dedication to proving the effectiveness of our business model, we faced financial challenges, with my family stepping in to support the business. With hard work and perseverance, we navigated these tough times, buoyed by the hope that better days lay ahead.
The onset of the pandemic in 2020 dealt a blow to our momentum with Inspections R Us, as HOAs scaled back their activities, including compliance checks. During this tumultuous period, my stepdaughter Zoe returned home and joined our efforts, enabling us to refocus on rebuilding the business after the pandemic subsided.
Meanwhile, my other business also struggled as foreclosures halted amidst the economic downturn. Despite enduring hardships, including meager meals and a vehicle repossession, we remained steadfast in our belief in the potential of our business. We diligently refined our business model and prepared to engage with more HOAs once normalcy returned.
Our perseverance bore fruit as HOAs gradually resumed operations in August 2021, culminating in a significant contract with a prominent management company. Within a year, we saw a remarkable surge from serving 55 HOAs to over 350, expanding our operations to seven states and offering services nationwide. We currently operating in 13 states and are doing over 1300 drives every month. What a turnaround!!
